The U.S. Army SBIR Program has competitively selected and awarded a Phase 1 research contract to VanDyne SuperTurbo Inc.™ The work will be based on a proposal titled: “Diesel Waste Heat Recovery Utilizing a SuperTurbo™.” Work is scheduled to begin immediately and will be conducted in three phases, with each phase award pending the success of the preceding phase. Effectively, the SuperTurbo™ creates a hybrid engine—the combination of a piston engine working together with a turbine engine. The company’s design integrates turbocharging, turbocompounding, and supercharging into one compact device connected to the engine by a continuously variable transmission. “If we can decrease the soot signature of our military vehicles on the battlefield, then we can ultimately save lives with this technology,” said Ed VanDyne, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the company. “Additionally, to be able to offer our troops the capability of increased fuel efficiency in an environment where refueling is difficult and fuel efficiency is paramount, then we have done something significant to aid our men and women in uniform.” SuperTurbo™ technology is being developed by VanDyne for more customers than the U.S. Army. VanDyne SuperTurbo, Inc.™ is an intellectual property company specializing in the design, development, production, and licensing of SuperTurbos™ for the global automotive market as well as for heavy-duty truck and off-highway engine manufacturers.
