U.S. Army SuperTurbocharges into the Future – VanDyne SuperTurbo, Inc.™ is Awarded a Small Business Innovative Research Contract from the U.S. Army

April 14, 2010

Fort Collins, Colo., April 14th 2010 — The US Army SBIR Program has competitively selected and awarded a Phase 1 research contract to VanDyne SuperTurbo, Inc.™ This work will be based on the proposal titled: “Diesel Waste Heat Recovery Utilizing a SuperTurbo™”. Work is scheduled to begin immediately and will be conducted in three phases; each phase award is pending the success of the previous phase.

“If we can decrease the soot signature of our military vehicles on the battle field then we can ultimately save lives with this technology,” said Ed VanDyne, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. “Additionally, to be able to offer our troops the capability of increased fuel efficiency in an environment where refueling is difficult and fuel efficiency is paramount then we have done something significant to aid our men and women in uniform”.

The program goal of Phase 1 and Phase 2 is to achieve a 7% increase in fuel efficiency as well as a corresponding 7% increase in maximum horsepower over the traditional turbocharged diesel engines within the US Army fleet. This fuel efficiency is achieved by taking normally wasted exhaust heat and recovering that energy through a custom turbine and adding that energy to the engines power to reduce fuel consumption. This gain also corresponds to a 7% reduction in CO₂ emissions for these engines.

Effectively, the SuperTurbo™ creates a hybrid engine; the combination of a piston engine working together with a turbine engine. The Company’s unique design integrates turbocharging, turbocompounding and supercharging into one compact device connected to the engine by a Continuously Variable Transmission. The SuperTurbo™ technology is being developed by VanDyne SuperTurbo, Inc.™ for more customers than just the US Army.

VanDyne SuperTurbo, Inc.™ is an Intellectual Property Company specializing in the design, development, production, and licensing of SuperTurbos™ for the global automotive market; as well as for heavy duty trucks and off highway engine manufacturers.
